‘Turkish result should not distract Cyprus from its position’

The results of the election in Turkey should not allow the island to compromise over occupation and partition, Akel leader Stefanos Stefanou said on Sunday.

“All of us never have and never will compromise either with the faits accompli of the occupation and the de facto partition, nor to compromise with the idea that there is nothing we can do,” he said addressing an event in Kofinou.

“We are trying to turn things in the direction of a solution to the Cyprus problem, the liberation and reunification of the country so that Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots can reunite and each one can go back to their own lands,” he added.

This, he said, is what Akel continues to fight for.

Discussing a compromise with whoever wins the elections in Turkey should not distract from what the Greek Cypriot side and Cyprus in general need to do, he said.

“We should create momentum for the resumption of negotiations from the point where they were interrupted [in Crans Montana in 2017],” he said, “to preserve the convergences achieved, to negotiate on the Guterres framework to complete an effort that began many years ago.

“We have never said that finding a solution to the Cyprus problem is easy”.
