Two young men – aged 19 and 24 – were remanded for four days by a Larnaca court on Friday on charges of car thefts and possession of dangerous weapons.

Larnaca police press spokesman Haris Hadjiyiasemi said the 19-year-old admitted to a “large number of thefts”. Officers are still trying to figure out the scale of them.

Officers responded to information and located the 19-year-old, a permanent resident, along the Finikoudes beachfront at 10pm on Thurdsay.

“The 19-year-old was searched and a folding iron baton was found, which he claimed was stolen from a car,” the spokesman said.

He added that the teen named another person, aged 24, and a police patrol spotted him around 3.30am on Friday while he was walking on Grigori Afxentiou Avenue.

“During a body search, officers found in his possession a folding knife with a plastic handle and a 9cm blade, which he told officers he had brought with him for self-defence,” Hadjiyiasemi said.

Hadjiyasemi elaborated that “when questioned, the 19-year-old admitted to a large number of thefts from cars in Larnaca, thefts that have been a concern for the police for the last month”.

The police are studying the reports of car thefts “in order to clarify how many cases were committed by the two individuals alone and how many jointly”.

He also said that “the two individuals were arrested and taken into custody and the offences of unlawful possession of a dangerous instrument, theft of property, unlawful possession of property, malicious damage, conspiracy to commit a crime and conspiracy to commit a misdemeanour are being investigated”.

On Friday morning they were brought before the Larnaca district court which handed down a four-day remand.
