Plastic bags in the north are sold at the increased price of one Turkish lira as of Monday, following a relevant ‘cabinet’ decision.
In a bid to prevent the unnecessary use of plastc bags, authorities in the north on Monday decided to increase the selling price of plastic bags with a thickness of 15-50 microns from 25 kurus to 1 Turkish lira.
The measure, in force as of Monday, is part of the wider policy aiming to stop the supply, sale, promotion or distribution of plastic bags in the north.
According to a relevant ‘government’ decision, plastic bags with handles will soon not be permitted to be given to consumers either for free or for a fee.
Light plastic bags without handles are exempt from the decision.
In the near future, single-use plastic items such as plastic cups, plates, straws and cutlery will also be banned in the north.
