El Greco Limassol presents the opening of Theodora Papachrysostomou: Nima, a large-scale exhibition that explores the range and evolution of her work, featuring examples of her woven/crochet sculptures across the years. The show will be on view until July 8.
Papachrysostomou pioneered weaving techniques and the connection between colour, texture, touch and nostalgia as primary subjects for her textile work. She attended Saint Martin’s School of Art in London and has been an artist and art tutor ever since, enjoying success and participating in many international solo and group exhibitions. Her mastery of form and passion for weaving is seen in her personal work and designs.
Illustrating Papachrysostomou’s artistic output, the exhibition traces her lasting contributions to textile art as an early weaving modernist. Papachrysostomou’s nuanced and delicate knitting, full of nostalgic yearning, guided everything she did. Her abstract shapes, innovative techniques and eccentric-coloured designs come with effortless ease.
“Knitting was passed on from my grandmother,” she said. “When I lost her, I found in knitting my therapy to revive some good and painful memories from the past because they are our path to the future. My improvisational knitting knows no mathematics or geometry. Those organic shapes birth this sentiment of connection to the feminine self and the act of creation and re-creation. Just like the womb that brings life that grows in it. Then, it detaches to become on its own.
“I am very thrilled to be exhibiting my work,” she concluded.
