The new Cyprus ambassador in America, Evangelos Savva, presented his credentials to US President Joe Biden in an official ceremony earlier this month, the government announced on Tuesday.

During the presentation of his credentials, Savva conveyed President Nikos Christodoulides’ warm greetings and paid tribute to the high level of Cyprus-US relations, as they have developed in recent years in areas such as security and defence, energy, technology and sciences, cultural heritage, as well as at the level of civil society.

He further pointed out that bilateral cooperation between Cyprus and the USA aims at the promotion of regional stability and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Savva underlined Christodoulides’ determination to further strengthen Cyprus-US bilateral relations, with the aim of consolidating a strategic partnership.

Biden characterised the progress achieved in the bilateral relations with Cyprus as historic, and referred to the personal friendship that connects him with the island. At the same time, he noted with satisfaction the fact that the two countries wish to jointly take advantage of emerging opportunities for close cooperation on several issues.

The ambassador also referred to efforts by the Christodoulides government for the resumption of negotiations with the aim of reaching a just and viable solution, and thanked Biden both for the US support for this initiative, and its commitment to the solution of the Cyprus problem on the basis of the agreed framework as set out in relevant UN Security Council resolutions.

Biden again reaffirmed the strong commitment of his country to the goal of reaching a comprehensive solution on the basis of a bizonal, bicommunal federation.
