There are no foreign soldiers active on the island with a mission to participate in the ongoing conflict in Israel, Defence Minister Michalis Giorgollas said on Tuesday.
It is understood he was not referring to the reservists travelling through Cyprus to head to Israel.
Commenting on reports from foreign press about commandos parked in Cyprus, the minister said they were not military fighters but used to help evacuate citizens from the war zone.
Speaking during the final phase of military exercise IRIS 2023, the minister said the crisis in the Middle East highlights Cyprus’ strategic humanitarian role and the support it can offer.
Asked what Cyprus’ readiness was in light of the developments in the region, Giorgallas said the facts on the ground “highlight once again the important strategic role that Cyprus has in the area, primarily as a country of stability, security and capable partner to support humanitarian operations.”
At the moment, it is common knowledge for every country with citizens in the Middle East that Cyprus “is effectively their backbone or partner that will help them evacuate their citizens from the war zone.”
On the military front, Cyprus has taken all necessary steps to ensure the country’s safety, Giorgallas added.
