Stewart: UN’s primary objective is to support efforts for a permanent settlement

The United Nations’ “primary objective [in Cyprus] is to support the efforts directed by the leaders to secure a permanent settlement,” according to its special representative on the island Colin Stewart.

Stewart was speaking on Tuesday to mark United Nations’ Day, and said “let us pledge, with hope and determination, to build a better world for everyone on the island and around the world.”

He added that 2024 will mark the 60th anniversary of the UN’s presence in Cyprus and said it had played “an important role in preventing tensions and helping to resolve issues impacting the daily lives of Cypriots across the island”.

“Our work with both sides has always been based on the principles of impartiality, cooperation, and respect,” he said, adding that “the participation of youth and women in the peace process is vital if we want to see lasting peace in Cyprus.”

He added that he is “proud” to recognise the work of UN services and programmes, which he said made “a significant contribution to Cyprus”.

Additionally, he said he reiterates UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ message that “it is our responsibility to help build a world of peace, sustainable development, and human rights for all.”
