The village of Lefkara welcomed a photography exhibition this month as UCLan Cyprus presents the Explore Cyprus: Beyond the City project. Travels in known and unknown villages and communities of the island have resulted in a charming photo-documentation reflecting the country’s identity. The project’s objective is to highlight and promote the Cyprus countryside, both in Cyprus and abroad, through the art of photography.

Led by the Explore Cyprus team of the British University, the project includes 354 photographs, one from each location, from 354 unique villages and communities. The exhibition will be on until March 31, 2024 at the Lefkara Conference Centre with plans to also travel to other corners of the island, as well as abroad. Although already open, the exhibition’s official opening ceremony will take place this Sunday at 3pm, held under the auspices of Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis.

Behind the project are academics and students from UCLan Cyprus, with a shared interest in photography, social impact and cultural preservation through creative practices. The project is led, designed and coordinated by Dr Christos Karpasitis, Assistant Professor in Digital Media and the Academic Leader of the BSc Web Design & Development programme of UCLan Cyprus. Dr Lambros Ioannou, lecturer of the programme, contributed his design expertise to support the project.

In collaboration with Karpasitis, a dedicated group of creative and passionate students (Aimilios Sotiriou, Sotiria Kirlappou, Rafaella Spyrou and Loizos Chrysanthou) embarked on a journey across Cyprus. They visited over 350 villages, capturing special moments while honing their photography and editing skills.
