Police in Limassol on Monday arrested five persons for theft, conspiracy to commit a felony, and illegal stay in the Republic.

According to the police, they were lead to the arrest after a member of the public alerted the authorities to the fact that unknown perpetrators were allegedly stealing from a construction site.

Officers from the Pachna police station arrived at the spot to find five people placing scaffolding in a vehicle.

During the ensuing check it was determined that they did not have identity documents in their possession and they were taken to the Episkopi police station for verification of information.

It was there established that three were asylum seekers, while the two remaining persons had been rejected for asylum, and were thus residing illegally in Cyprus.

The suspects were arrested based on court warrants and taken into custody while the Pachna police continue investigations.
