Ongoing exhibition brings together greats of the past

An exhibition opening in the capital city this Saturday marks the historical post-life union of two friends and important artists who paved the way for the arts in Cyprus. Glyn Hughes and Christoforos Savva set up the first private gallery and artist-run space on the island in 1960 named Apophasi and this December Apocalypse Gallery revisits their legacy.

Meta-Synergeia will run until the end of January, and marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of the iconic Christoforos Savva.

The Apophasi Gallery was an energetic point of reference, gathering important art lovers and creatives of the new era. It was a non-profit institution and a pioneering venture for the time that despite its short five-year operation playing a key role in the artistic development of Cyprus as the island became a Republic.

“This particular time period,” say exhibition organisers, “deserves a socio-political analysis to justify the reasons why we acted and did exactly what we did just because we were in Cyprus and not somewhere else Hughes used to say.” The gallery played a vital role as a meeting ground for free-thinking artists during a transformative time in history and now, another Nicosia gallery is bringing the conversation back into the spotlight.
