A Belgian man appeared in court in the north on Tuesday after having been arrested the previous day when he illegally crossed from the Republic.

The man was found by soldiers on a military base in the Ayios Dometios area at around 2pm on Monday, before a police search discovered five grams of cannabis on his person.

He reportedly admitted to having crossed from the Republic without passing through a crossing point and to having bought the cannabis in the Republic for €10.

He was remanded in custody for three days.
