The man who was “too drunk to remember” stealing a lorry in the Republic and driving it through Louroujina to the north is of “full mental capacity”, it was heard in court on Tuesday.

Speaking at the man’s second court hearing, police officer Aysin Erdemirci explained that the suspect had undergone testing at the Baris Mental and Neurological Diseases hospital and had been declared mentally fit to stand criminal trial.

He also explained that the man had driven in his own car southwards out of the village of Louroujina and into the Republic on New Year’s Eve.

From there, he managed to take a lorry and a trailer belonging to a business in the Republic and drive it back to the north, once again via Louroujina.

Police later found the lorry parked on northern Nicosia’s ring road, north of the village of Mandres. Their representative in court said they found a shoe print in the lorry identical to one found in the suspect’s house. Two batteries and a tape recorder had been stolen from the lorry.

In addition, Erdemirci said, the man’s own car was found at the place from which the lorry was stolen.

He also made reference to the suspect’s earlier statements, in which he had said “I was too drunk to be able to remember what happened, I do not remember anything.”

The suspect has previous convictions for smuggling, violating military areas, human trafficking and drug-related offences.

Judge Zehra Yalkut Bilgec ordered he be held in custody for a period not exceeding one month subject to trial.
