Cyprus is in close cooperation with the directly interested parties in order to contribute to the next steps regarding sending humanitarian aid to Gaza through sea and land corridors, Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos said on Monday.

Kombos was speaking during a discussion on the Middle East at the EU Foreign Affairs Council, which also discussed Ukraine and Hungary’s stance and digital diplomacy.

Regarding the Middle East, Kombos reiterated Cyprus’ plea for a ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages.

He also pointed to the need to avoid further escalation and destabilisation in the region.

Commenting on the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Gaza, Kombos said it was necessary to secure the quick, safe and unhindered flow of aid to Gaza.

He said Cyprus was cooperating closely with the directly interested parties and partners towards this end.

During discussions on Ukraine, Kombos expressed Cyprus’ solidarity with the country, deplored Russian attacks on non-military infrastructure in Ukraine and the loss of civilians and called for the full respect of international law.

Kombos said Cyprus was also a victim of invasion and occupation, adding that Turkey’s continuing policy to cement the results of the invasion was deplorable.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Kombos met with his Dutch counterpart Caspar Veldkamp.

He also attended the opening of a photograph exhibition at Cyprus’ permanent representation to the EU on the 50 years since the Turkish invasion.

The exhibition starts its journey in Brussels and will travel to many of Cyprus’ diplomatic missions abroad.

“This is not just a point in our history. It is, unfortunately, our everyday reality,” Kombos said.

He added that the clear message to be given was that the island must be reunified.

“This is the only way. This is the only acceptable way,” he said.
