A Lufthansa flight from Munich to Tel Aviv landed in Larnaca, Cyprus, Israeli press reports said on Thursday.
Times of Israel said the airline told Channel 12 that the plane landed in Cyprus “as a precautionary measure due to security activity”.
The crew said it was not prepared to fly to Israel.
According to the report, the airline initially informed passengers that the plane would land in Cyprus for “technical reasons” and then it would be decided whether the flight would continue to Tel Aviv.
However, after some time on the ground, it was announced that the plane would return to Germany.
Passengers were told they could disembark in Cyprus if they wished, but their luggage would remain on the plane and be taken back to Germany.
Director of Aviation Development, Marketing and Communication at Hermes Maria Kouroupi said there are currently no cancellations or changes to the flight schedule of Cyprus’ airports due to the situation in the Middle East.
“We hope that the situation will not worsen and normalize. We certainly hope that it will not affect us, because we are in the middle of the summer season and it is a very critical period.”
Asked whether airlines stopped their flights to Lebanon, Israel and other countries in the region due to the situation and instead increased their flight schedule to Cyprus, Kouroupi said “we are in the middle of the summer season and schedules do not change easily.
“What we are interested in is that the scheduling, which is at a very good level, continues uninterrupted and that we don’t have any other operational issues.”
