British Forces in Cyprus have received solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging equipment from Beam Global, which is now operational across their bases, according to a statement released by the Sovereign Base Areas (SBAs) on Tuesday.

The delivery includes ten portable EV charging stations along with a trailer for transporting the units between sites.

The equipment is currently deployed across the SBAs at Episkopi, Dhekelia, Akrotiri and Ayios Nikolaos. Each charging unit can power two vehicles simultaneously, allowing for a total of 20 vehicles to be charged solely using solar energy.

To ensure effective operation, Beam Global provided a brief training session for the personnel involved. The contract for the equipment, valued at €960,000, was announced in March.

“We’re really happy to have recently procured ten Beam solar-powered EV ARC charging systems,” said the Commanding Officer of Transport Unit HQ BFC Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Taylor.

“These portable charging stations fit within a standard parking space and will harness the abundant sunshine from Cyprus, providing a clean energy source. This significantly contributes to our environmental responsibility and enhances our emergency resilience.”

The solar chargers are independent of the electrical grid and can be deployed within minutes without the need for construction or electrical work. Their flexibility allows them to be quickly moved to different locations for events, emergencies, or to optimise their placement.

Beyond vehicle charging, the equipment holds significant potential for broader applications, such as acting as mobile generators, powering temporary hospitals and supporting military exercises in remote areas.
