Increased traffic checks will be in force over the next few days starting on Tuesday, police have announced.

The stepped-up traffic operations went into effect to ensure safety of drivers and crime detection during the August 13 to 15 holidays.

Police will be stationed at key points on the road traffic network, to prevent traffic violations and collisions, as well as conduct checks for drunk driving.

Motorised and foot patrols will also be stepped up to guard against burglaries and thefts, while crowded places will also be monitored for all forms of illegality, police said.

The forestry department meanwhile has also issued a warning for extreme risk of fires due to the intense heat and prolonged drought conditions and urge the public to be especially cautious when gathering for food preparation involving fire, especially in picnic sites.

The public is reminded that grilling is only permitted in designated fire pits in picnic spots.
