Five Greek Cypriots and two Turkish Cypriots listed as missing persons have been identified so far in 2024, statistics released by the Committee for Missing Persons on Sunday showed.

At the same time, skeletal remains have so far been found in 49 excavations, 15 wells and one other location with bones, the committee said.

In addition to the seven people listed as missing, a further four people’s bones were identified as the bones of 16 people have so far been located this year.

Last year a total of 15 Greek Cypriots and one Turkish Cypriot were identified from 29 people’s bones found at excavation sites.

The year the most were identified was in 2014 when 140 Greek Cypriots and 17 Turkish Cypriots were named. The largest number Turkish Cypriots were identified in 2018, when 36 were named. The same year, 35 Greek Cypriots were identified.

In total, 756 Greek Cypriots and 295 Turkish Cypriots have been identified. There remain 754 Greek Cypriots and 197 Turkish Cypriots listed as missing.
