The forestry department on Monday warned hunters about lighting fires, as the hunting season begins on Sunday.
Hunters are advised to completely avoid lighting fires for any reason, as well as throwing lit cigarette butts and matches, since the prevailing weather conditions are particularly favourable for the outbreak and spread of fires, the department said.
It also said that dumping empty cartridges constitutes serious pollution and that this is also prohibited by the law. “Therefore, hunters are requested to collect empty cartridges.”
It added that lighting fires in forest and rural areas is strictly prohibited and constitutes an offence, which, according to the Forestry Law, is punishable by imprisonment of up to 10 years or a fine of up to €50,000 or both.
Lighting fires is only allowed in the specially designed grills in excursion areas.
Anyone that sees smoke or fire is advised to call 1407 at the forestry department of 112 for the fire services.
