The number of burglaries across Nicosia has decreased in the ‘worrisome’ month of August this year, according to a report on Tuesday.

August is usually the month that the capital is all but empty, as residents go on holiday or choose to leave the city for a beach vacation elsewhere in the country.

As such, Nicosia is always troubled with burglaries in August but according to statistics revealed by Philenews there has been a drop this year.

For the whole of 2022, there were 393 break-ins in the capital, which went up by 30 in 2023.

In the first seven-and-a-half months of this year, there were 150 break-ins. Should it continue to average 20 a month, the year could end with 240 break-ins, the report said.

Police confirmed the figures, adding that in the first 20 days of August there were 13 break-ins, most of which were in the outskirts of Nicosia.
