The highway between Limassol and Nicosia was reopened in full shortly after Midday on Monday, after being closed twice due to a serious accident which took place overnight.
Both lanes on the northbound carriageway had been closed twice during the morning after a bin lorry had overturned on the road.
The road was first closed because of the accident itself, and then to allow a tow truck to remove the overturned lorry from the highway.
According to police, the accident involved a bin lorry driver who lost control of his vehicle around 1am, and in circumstances under investigation, hit the railing, smashed into the divider and overturned. Garbage and parts of the truck were scattered over the road.
The 42-year-old driver was taken to a private hospital in Limassol, having suffered a severe head trauma and other injuries, and is intubated in critical condition.
The driver was not transporting any other workers at the time and no other vehicle appears to have been involved in the accident but police are still investigating the latter.
Both highway lanes had been closed between the Parekklisia and Moni exits, and traffic was being diverted to the old Limassol to Nicosia road. Drivers heading for Nicosia had been instructed to use the Parekklisia exit.
Efforts were underway to remove the rubbish truck from the road with a crane.
