A 17-year-old boy was sentenced to two years in prison on Wednesday after having been convicted of robbing a simit shop in northern Nicosia.

Jude Tutku Candas said the boy had entered the Sulkem Simit Evi at 3.50am on January 8.

She said that when inside, he had stolen 12,000TL (€316) in cash from the shop’s till and caused 2,000TL (€53) worth of damage to a camera recording system worth 5,000TL (€132).

She said he had been tried for the crimes of breaking into a shop and trespassing, and said he had been found guilty on all charges. The maximum sentence available is a total of seven years in prison.

She then pointed out that the boy already has three previous convictions for breaking into shops, adding he did not offer any compensation to the shop’s owner.

But she said this was mitigated by the fact he is young, and had been awaiting trial for eight months.

As a result, he was sentenced to two years behind bars.
