Art exhibitions are having their moment. Every autumn, as life gets moving again with the start of the new academic year, the artistic world is refreshed with new projects and presentations. This week, a new exhibition opens in Nicosia as Alpha CK Art Gallery presents the new series of works by Cypriot artist Nikos Kourousis. The opening event on Friday will reveal 14 new wall-mounted and floor-standing sculptures.
Kourousis has had a long artistic career, receiving awards and distinctions, establishing him as one of the leading artists who not only contributed to the island’s art scene but also became one of the veteran founders of contemporary art in Cyprus.
His artistic journey is based on the idea that “the medium is not the foundation of artistic creation. The medium engages in dialogue with the concept, and together they create the work.” His subject matter is closely tied to mythology, and through his works, he invites viewers to reflect on the human and social dimensions, exploring new artistic directions and expressive means.
His work has been presented in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the Young Artists Biennale in Paris, the India Triennale in New Delhi, the Commonwealth Institute in London, Ateneo de Madrid in Spain and many others. In 2021, he was awarded the Medal of Excellence by the Cyprus Academy of Sciences, Letters, and Arts and his works are part of public and private collections in Cyprus and abroad, from Greece to Armenia and China.
For this new exhibition, he returns to his hometown where he will showcase new artworks until November 2.
