The Third China-Cyprus Youth Forum commenced this week with a strong focus on creating deeper connectivity between the youth of both nations. The forum, taking place at the European University of Cyprus, brings together 30 youth representatives from each country, including those from government agencies, businesses, research institutions, universities, media, and other influential sectors. The aim is to foster collaboration on key themes: mutual learning between civilizations, digital transformation, and green development.
Co-organised by the Chinese Embassy in Cyprus, the government of Nanjing City (the rotating chair of the China-Cyprus Sister City Alliance), the Ministry of Education, Sport, and Youth of Cyprus, and bodies from Larnaca City, the forum signals a new chapter of cooperation between China and Cyprus. Other key partners include the European University of Cyprus, the Confucius Institute at the University of Cyprus, and the Youth Board of Cyprus.
A Warm Welcome from Officials
The forum opened with a reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Cyprus, where key officials from both nations gathered to express their support for this initiative. Among the speakers were His Excellency Ambassador Liu Yantao, Mr. Xu Ming, Vice Director of Nanjing Municipal People’s Congress, Mr. Xu Ming, the Mayor of Nicosia Mr. Charalambos Prountzos, and former Rector of the European University, Professor. Gouliamos. Each speech echoed the importance of fostering cross-cultural ties and encouraging the next generation to build on these relationships for mutual prosperity.
Speaking at the reception, Cyprus Mail CEO Freda Yannitsas shared her reflections on how this forum serves as a critical opportunity for both nations. “It is an honour to be invited to the Third China-Cyprus Youth Forum, a gathering that aims to foster deeper connectivity between the youth of our two nations. Together, we stand at a pivotal moment—one where the exchange of ideas, culture, and innovation will pave the way for a shared future of mutual respect, learning, and development,” Yannitsas stated. She also shared insights from her recent visit to China, where she was inspired by the blend of cultural heritage and technological advancements that underpin the country’s development.
Key Topics: Culture, Technology, and Green Development
Over the course of the next two days, the forum will delve into three key topics: Mutual Learning Between Civilizations, Digital Transformation, and Green Development. The discussions are designed to encourage dialogue and partnerships between the two countries’ young leaders, with the goal of balancing the rapid pace of technological change with the preservation of cultural heritage.
Yannitsas touched on this challenge in her speech, noting that “one of the greatest challenges facing both Cyprus and China is finding a balance between the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape and the preservation of our cultural heritage. As we embrace the new digital age and green development initiatives, we must ensure that we do not lose sight of who we are and the values that bind us across generations.”
The Road Ahead: Plenary Session and Youth Declaration
Tomorrow’s agenda will feature a plenary session at the European University of Cyprus, scheduled from 10:00 to 12:00. The highlight of the session will be the release of the China-Cyprus Youth Declaration, a document that outlines the key takeaways and commitments made by participants from both nations. This declaration is expected to lay the groundwork for further collaboration in areas of business, culture, and social relations between China and Cyprus.
Following the forum, youth representatives will visit several iconic Cypriot towns, including Larnaca, Lefkara, and Limassol, where they will explore the country’s rich cultural heritage and discuss opportunities for future collaboration.
Building Bridges for the Future
The forum’s core message, as reflected in the remarks of several key speakers, is one of optimism for the future. Youth from both nations were encouraged to take the lead in fostering connectivity, mutual learning, and respect for each other’s traditions and innovations. Yannitsas closed her speech with a hopeful message, quoting both Confucius and Aristotle to emphasise the potential of today’s youth to shape the future: “Youth is the age of trust, passion, and hope,” she said, expressing faith that the next generation of leaders will carry the torch forward for stronger cooperation between China, Cyprus, and beyond.
As the forum progresses, all eyes are on the young ambassadors representing their nations, whose work over the next few days will help to strengthen the relationship between China and Cyprus, driving the shared future envisioned by the forum’s participants and organisers.
