A 15-year-old boy was arrested on Thursday night after having allegedly edited into existence explicit images of teachers and pupils at the senior school he attends, British bases police confirmed on Friday.

The child, who attends a school in the Larnaca district, gave a written statement to the police before being released, and appeared in court in the Dhekelia base on Friday.

There, he was released pending his next hearing on November 1, subject to a number of conditions.

Those conditions include that he may not use any electronic devices, including telephones, laptops, tablets, or other computers, that he may not use the internet by any means, and that he may not contact any of his alleged “victims” or any other person who may be involved with the case.

Additionally, he has been ordered to “comply with his school’s rules”. He said he would not respond to any of the charges until he consulted a lawyer.

Two parallel investigations are being carried out into the incident, one by the bases’ police and one by Cyprus’ education ministry.

The images are being examined, with it currently being believed they were edited by pupils at the school and then circulated in social media groups.

The education ministry has requested that the school file a report on the matter and is continuing its investigation.

The pupils who were the subject of the edits were reportedly “disturbed” that their faces had been placed on images containing explicit content, and as such reported the incident to their school.

The school’s investigation into the matter found that teachers’ faces had also been edited into such images.

The school’s parents’ association has also moved to say the school is not responsible for the incident, as the offending images were apparently posted late on Wednesday night.

As such, some pupils who were victims of the edits were only made aware of the images on Thursday morning, before immediately reporting them to the school, which in turn immediately reported them to the police.

It has been reported that in addition to the child who was arrested on Thursday, there may be two more perpetrators. Their mobile phones and computers are likely to be seized and searched as a result.

If they are over 14 years old, they will be able to be held criminally liable.

The bases’ police are also expected to take statements from both students and teachers who were victims of the incident, with their investigation into the matter also ongoing.
