The UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (Unficyp) is investigating Monday’s incident in Deneia, where a Turkish army officer allegedly threatened a farmer, while he was tending his field in the buffer zone.

“We are investigating yesterday’s reported incident. We are liaising with both the community leaders and the Turkish forces to resolve” the issue, Unficyp spokesman Aleem Siddique told the Cyprus Mail.

He added that the incident was “one of many incidents reported to us on a weekly basis” and that Unficyp intervention on Monday was “successful”.

Siddique expressed hope that “we will resolve this issue also.”

On Monday afternoon, a jeep drove up with the officer in question and armed soldiers and reportedly began harassing the farmer.

The farmer stayed put and the local authorities called the United Nations to intervene.

Members of Unficyp managed to calm things down and asked the residents of Deneia to give them 24 hours to speak with the Turkish troops and request explanations.
