Cyprus and Malta have formalised an agreement to strengthen their collaboration on water resources management.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), signed in Nicosia by Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou and Malta’s Environment, Energy and Enterprise Minister Miriam Dalli, outlines joint actions in areas such as desalination, wastewater management, and public awareness on water conservation.

Addressing shared concerns, Cyprus and Malta aim to tackle water scarcity and drought through innovative methods and enhanced resilience to future water challenges.

The MoU was signed on the sidelines of a regional conference called “Navigating Water Challenges in the South and Eastern Mediterranean: Sustainability and Resilience”, organised by the European Investment Bank in Nicosia.

Both nations identified key areas for action, including the implementation of European water policy, the protection and sustainable management of water resources, water desalination, and the reuse of treated wastewater, particularly in agriculture.

The MoU also highlights the importance of water quality monitoring, leak management, public education and reducing consumption.

Additionally, Cyprus and Malta plan to share resources and exchange information on the socioeconomic aspects of water resources management.

The MoU establishes a joint working group to coordinate and oversee these initiatives, promoting ongoing cooperation and long-term solutions.

Through the agreement, both countries reaffirmed their commitment to responsible water management and the protection of vital natural resources.
