Some political leaders on Thursday extended their congratulations to Donald Trump on his election as US president, expressing optimism that his administration will support efforts to resolve the Cyprus issue.

President Nikos Christodoulides, who had extended his congratulations to Trump on Wednesday, emphasised the importance of strengthening the strategic partnership between Cyprus and the US, highlighting his commitment to deepening transatlantic ties.

MP Averof Neophytou also welcomed Trump’s election on Thursday, saying it will have a strong impact on the region.

He called on Cyprus’s leadership to engage actively with the US on the Cyprus issue and to use Trump’s election as an opportunity to further strengthen bilateral relations. He also suggested dispelling concerns about political uncertainty tied to the US presidential transition.

“The shared interests of our two countries are long-term and do not depend on the change of presidents in the US,” Neophytou noted.

In their own statement congratulating the new US president, Depa expressed hopes that Trump will support United Nations efforts to make progress on a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus issue, within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions.

The party added that it looks forward to strengthening US-Cyprus relations through continued diplomatic and strategic cooperation, particularly in the fields of security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean.
