An Oscar-worthy Middle Ages experience in medieval Nicosia this winter
The play The Lion in Winter by James Goldman, which earned him an Academy Award for its screenplay adaptation, portrays the royal family of England on Christmas Eve in 1183. For this medieval family (that of Richard the Lionheart), the term’ dysfunctional’ might be an understatement.
That is what organisers of a theatrical production currently being staged say about the play. Since November, The Lion in Winter has taken over Casteliotissa Hall with Friday, Saturday and Sunday performances by Alpha Square. A cast of local actors bring a Greek adaptation of the play and will continue to do so throughout December in Nicosia, taking one performance to Limassol in early January.
The story begins around Christmas time in 1183. At the French castle of Chinon, King Henry II of England is joined by his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine, whom he has kept imprisoned since 1173. A series of schemes and manipulations ensue – not only between the couple but also among their three surviving sons, Richard, Geoffrey and John, as well as their guest at the Christmas court, King Philip II Augustus of France. Adding to the intrigue is Philip’s half-sister Alais, who was betrothed to Richard at the age of eight but is now Henry’s mistress.
At the ruthless negotiation table of this Christmas gathering, three prizes are at stake: the crown of England for the future king, the inheritance of French lands, and Alais’ hand in marriage. But above all, what is really being negotiated within the castle walls – and within each character – are jealousy, betrayal, revenge and enduring childhood scars.
This winter, the dramatic retelling of this story comes to life in the medieval Casteliotissa Hall. The Oscar-winning text has been translated and directed by Andreas Araouzos, with original music composed by Dimitris Zachariou. The space is uniquely illuminated by Nikos Mylonas and dressed – along with the actors – by Giorgos Giannou. The royal family is brought to life by Varnavas Kyriakides, Annita Santorinaiou, Michalis Kazakas, Andreas Daniil, Michalis Anayiotos, Anthi Kasinou and Nikos Kosonas.
As the New Year arrives, the play will tour more cities. On January 5, it will be presented in front of Limassol audiences with a 6pm performance at the Pattihio Municipal Theatre and on January 8 at Paphos’ Markideio Theatre for an 8pm show.
