A church fire in Limassol on Wednesday was caused by a lit candle.

The fire which started at 10.00am in the church of Ayios Constantinos and Eleni in Kantou damaged the inside of the building.

It was extinguished by community members and fire fighters.

“The fire in the church was first noticed by community members who tried to stop it with fire extinguishers and managed to limit the damage to the holy altar,” the fire department’s press officer, Koulla Mesaritou said.

Ecclesiastical objects on and around the altar were also damaged.
