Nicosia has become the first city in Cyprus to join the global Making Cities Resilient network 2030 (MCR2030), the city’s municipality announced on Wednesday.
The network is a global initiative led by the United Nations Office for the Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR). which aims to help cities become more resilient to disasters and climate risks by 2030.
Among the total of 1,677 cities that participate in the programme, Cyprus ranks as the 86th member country in the initiative.
“This inclusion underlines Nicosia’s commitment to strengthening disaster resilience and sustainable urban development, establishing its position as a city preparing to face the challenges of the 21st century,” the Nicosia municipality’s announcement said.
Participation in MCR2030 gives Nicosia access to tools that enhance its capacity to assess and improve disaster risk management, and the opportunity to enhance the skills of stakeholders through trainings, knowledge exchange and collaboration opportunities with experts and others cities, it added.
In the context of the capital’s inclusion in the programme, the municipality held an educational activity which saw over 120 participants and international speakers sharing best practices from other cities in the network.
“With the cooperation and support of local and international agencies, Nicosia will continue to develop as a modern, safe and innovative city, ready to meet the challenges of the future,” the announcement concludes.
