No further yellow weather warning was issued for Wednesday afternoon the meteorological service said, after Cyprus received what it described as ‘beneficial rainfall’.
Met service head Michalis Mouskos said overall the island had experienced “limited problems” and while the ‘Bora’ weather system was still expected to bring more rains and storms, they were below the intensity that requires a warning.
Total rainfall had not yet been recorded but it had surely covered a “very respectable” percentage of expected rainfall for the month of December and was beneficial Mouskos said.
Elsewhere, problems in Limassol had been minor due to the effectiveness of the city’s anti-flood works, head of the district administration (Eoa) said.
In Polemidia, Marinou Gerolanou street, which always floods during heavy rains, was closed in time by the police, said Mayor Andros Theodorou said.
Pumps did not function at that site on Tuesday and crews were at the scene to ascertain what went wrong and drain the water.
Authorities had proposed installation of a larger rainwater drain on 22nd street near Ermis Stadium, where a large amount of water also collects.
Meanwhile in Larnaca the main complaint came from a flooded school.
Famagusta was reported as the hardest hit district, with torrential rains overnight and in the early morning prompting a swift response by authorities.
The fire service issued a final count of 30 incidents in that district, with four crews working to pump water from flooded basements, open storm drains, and tow stranded vehicles in Sotira and Paralimni.
Drivers faced treacherous conditions, with flooded roads, reduced visibility and slippery surfaces reported across the district.
Water had accumulated on the Larnaca to Ayia Napa highway, in Sotira, Paralimni, and on the road to Makronissos beach.
Fire services received 52 calls overnight with 27 of them related to the storm, but no injuries were reported.
Paphos witnesses seven such incidents, Nicosia five, and Limassol four.
In addition to storm-related calls, the fire service responded to ten fires, 14 unrelated “special services,” and one hoax call.
