A stray cat feeding corner in Engomi was reportedly destroyed several days ago by workers from the Nicosia municipality, according to eyewitness accounts.
Witnesses reported seeing a truck bearing the municipality’s emblem at the site. After it left, 10 cat houses were missing, feeding containers were broken, two cat houses were damaged, and garbage was scattered across the area. Additionally, 20 to 25 cats appeared to have disappeared from the area.
“The corner was created by volunteers who dedicated their own money and time to take care of the cats with no help from the state.” The Cyprus greens movement said.
The deputy mayor of Engomi said he was unaware of the incident. When the greens movement contacted the Nicosia municipality, officials promised to investigate further.
“As the Cyprus greens movement, we call for an immediate investigation into this incident, the replacement of the destroyed cat houses, and measures to protect stray animals,” the movement said in a statement.
The greens also urged people with any information about the destruction to contact the police.
