Twenty-seven unions are holding a demonstration outside the Turkish Cypriot ‘finance ministry’ in northern Nicosia on Monday as they continue their protests against inflation.
The protest against the high cost of living will start at 1:30pm and involve unions of both public and private sectors.
“They are reacting to the government’s attempt to change the calculation of the cost of living and to interfere with the right to negotiating collectively. This is not just the struggle of the unions, but the struggle of all the people. We must act together for our future,” said the general secretary of the Turkish Cypriot teachers’ union (KTÖS) Burak Mavis said.
Meanwhile the planned 24-hour strike by employees at the control tower of the Tymbou (Ercan) airport was postponed for 60 days by ‘government’ decree.
The Turkish Cypriot administration issued a decree of prohibition, which was published in the “official gazette”.
On Friday, 19 unions of public sector workers protested for the same reasons, throwing potatoes at the north’s ‘prime minister’ Unal Ustel’s office.
