Photographs often appear as natural, value-free representations of the world; objective records of places, people and events ‘as they really were’ when photographers encountered them. Yet, reading these images critically can reveal the assumptions, preconceptions and worldviews of those who produced them.
The Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation (BoCCF) and bahçes histories* of Cyprus, invite you to the second session of the “Cyprus Insula” conversation series, entitled “Photography and Cyprus: representations of the island and its people from the 19th to the 20th century”. The conversation will take place on Thursday, December 19, 2024 at the Foundation’s premises.
The session will entail a discussion as to how Cypriot and non-Cypriot photographers sought to represent the island’s history and culture over the 19th-20th centuries, exploring how particular ideas about identity, society, politics and change persisted through time.
The discussion will be in English, with the possibility of translation into Greek during the conversation.
