The House will be voting at Thursday’s plenary on a referred bill amending the Constitution, establishing the right to a healthy and sustainable environment, after the legal committee on Wednesday accepted additions presented by the Law Office.

The bill had been referred by President Nikos Christodoulides after it was passed with 37 votes in favour on December 5 by the House plenary.

To make any changes to the Constitution, the majority voting in favour should include at least two thirds of the total number of MPs, which is 38.

One of the reasons included in the president’s letter was the number of votes in favour.

Chairman of the committee Nicos Tornaritis said the bill was something the legal committee could be proud of, as it contained beneficial provisions for the country and the people.

Tornaritis said the amendment allowed people to raise issues concerning pollution before justice and would also give them access to information.
