President Nikos Christodoulides welcomed EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, for talks at the presidential palace on Friday morning.

During the meeting, Kadis briefed Christodoulides on current plans and challenges in the sector. Both agreed to maintain close communication in preparation for Cyprus’ EU Council Presidency in 2026.

Later, Kadis met with House president Annita Demetriou to discuss the protection of Cyprus’ maritime environment.

“Your contribution is also needed here,” Kadis said, referring to the ratification of international agreements concerning Cyprus’ territorial waters. Demetriou assured him of her commitment to supporting the process.

The commissioner emphasised the EU’s commitment to supporting initiatives for marine protection in Cyprus, highlighting that “we must find ways as soon as possible to move forward with the green transition”.

Kadis also highlighted the need to preserve fisheries as a sustainable sector, stressing “the proper management of our precious seas, which are a source of life.”

As the fisheries commissioner, Kadis is responsible for the European fisheries and aquaculture sector.

As commissioner, Kadis is responsible for overseeing the European fisheries and aquaculture sector, implementing the EU’s fisheries policy, and evaluating its economic, environmental, and social impact. Additionally, he is tasked with developing strategies to ensure sustainability and job creation in the sector.
