A total of 464,064 vehicle licences have been renewed in Cyprus as of February 26, the department of road transport (TOM) reported on Thursday. The department has reminded vehicle owners that the final deadline for renewal is Tuesday, March 11, at midnight.

The renewal period for 2025 licences began on January 7. Comparisons show a steady rise in renewals, with last year’s figures reaching 436,923 by the same date in 2024. Vehicle owners have the option to renew their licences for three, six, nine or twelve months.

TOM said that renewals completed before the March 11 deadline will not incur any penalties. However, any renewals after this date will be subject to an extra charge, consisting of a €10 fee plus an additional 10 per cent of the annual licence cost.

To successfully renew a licence, vehicle owners must ensure they have a valid roadworthiness certificate and insurance. TOM has also urged owners to update their contact details in its registry. This will enable them to receive important notifications, such as vehicle recalls.

Authorities are advising the public to complete the renewal process early to avoid potential system overloads in the final days. Those who renewed their licence in 2024 but do not plan to do so for 2025 must formally notify the TOM of their vehicle’s immobilisation. This can be done online at https://rtd.mcw.gov.cy. Failure to do so will result in continued liability for road tax payments.

Vehicles without a renewed 2024 licence and not declared as immobilised will be removed from the Tom registry if outstanding fees are not paid by the March 11 deadline.

For vehicles that have been destroyed, owners must submit a cancellation request along with a “certificate of destruction” issued by licensed waste processing facilities. This ensures exemption from road tax payments from the date of destruction.
