President Christodoulides hailed the visit of Kazakhstan’s Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu as “historic” during a meeting at the presidential palace on Wednesday. This marks the first official visit by a Kazakh foreign minister to Cyprus, signalling a new chapter in bilateral relations.
President Christodoulides emphasised that Nicosia is ready to strengthen ties with Kazakhstan, building on past diplomatic efforts. He recalled his own visit to Astana as foreign minister, during which Cyprus and Kazakhstan signed a double taxation avoidance agreement, a key step in fostering economic cooperation.
The meeting focused on deepening political and economic relations, with both sides discussing the possibility of direct flights between the two countries. President Christodoulides noted that such a move would enhance connectivity and trade, further strengthening diplomatic ties.
He also highlighted the growing momentum in relations, pointing to the establishment of diplomatic missions in both countries as a sign of commitment. Additionally, he reaffirmed Cyprus’s support for closer EU-Kazakhstan relations and expressed readiness to visit Astana again. His planned visit aligns with Cyprus preparing to assume the EU Council Presidency in the first half of 2026.
Wednesday’s discussions mark a significant step towards greater cooperation between Cyprus and Kazakhstan, with both nations looking ahead to expanded diplomatic and economic partnerships.
