President Nikos Christodoulides is participating on Thursday in the European Paris Summit, aimed at reaching a comprehensive peace agreement following recent ceasefire negotiations between the US, Russia and the Ukraine.

On the sidelines of the summit, the president will hold a bilateral meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron and a trilateral meeting with Macron and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun.

Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis said on Wednesday that the summit on Ukraine is set for the morning with the participation of a number of leaders, heads of state and government, as well as heads of international organisations.

He added that the participation of the president in the Paris summit follows a meeting of the National Guard chiefs, on March 11.

The Republic is participating in the consultations of “a small but substantial group of states” working to support the peace process in Ukraine, Letymbiotis said. Talks will focus on the EU’s role and participation, “respect for international law and the principles of sovereignty, and the territorial integrity and independence of all states,” the government spokesman said.

On the sidelines of the summit Christodoulides and Macron will discuss bilateral relations, areas of common interest, and strengthening the strategic relationship between their states.

The spokesperson said the trilateral meeting, which will include Lebanon, will be held on Friday, during which the latest developments in that state and in the Eastern Mediterranean will be discussed, within the framework of the ongoing efforts by Cyprus to strengthen regional dialogue and stability.
