The police on Wednesday evening announced the arrest of three minors and one 18-year-old male in connection with the clashes between teenagers and the police which broke out in Limassol last Friday.

All four were charged in writing before being released to be summoned to court at a later date.

Their arrests bring the total number of people arrested in connection with the incident to 25.

It had been reported on Monday that groups of teenagers had clashed with the police in the Limassol suburb of Ayia Phyla after gathering to mark 100 days until they are conscripted into the National Guard.

They reportedly caused a “public nuisance” as well as setting fires, vandalising property, and attacking the police with rocks.

Police spokeswoman Kyriaki Lambrianidou said the events had centred near a bakery in the area, and that a small number of police officers had attended the scene before being “attacked with rocks”.

However, news website Alpha reported that the parents of eight of those arrested thus far had said their children were “uninvolved” in the trouble. One mother said her son was in the area because he had gone to buy something from a local kiosk.

President Nikos Christodoulides had on Monday described the incidents as “completely unacceptable”, while Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis described the police’s response to the matter as “immediate and effective”.

“Thanks to the swift police response, the situation was contained, and worse consequences were avoided,” he added.
