The Larnaca self-governance organisation (EOA) announced strict controls on Wednesday, in a bid to curb wasteful use of water.
“As of this week, the agency is proceeding with the imposition of a fine in the event of using a hose to wash sidewalks, roads, terraces, railings and cars,” the statement from the Larnaca water and sanitation authority said.
The agency’s action is backed by special water saving legislation (Law 1/1991), in view of the prolonged drought conditions.
“With the summer expected to be particularly difficult and water supplies already insufficient, the authority is intensifying its efforts to conserve water,” the statement said.
Onsite checks and inspections at city premises will be conducted to ensure legal compliance. Non-compliance will be handled with the serving of notices and extrajudicial fines.
According to the law, violations are considered criminal offenses. Convicted offenders may face up to three months in prison, a fine of up to €513, or both.
However, the offense can be settled out of court by paying a €51 fine directly to the EOA office.
The water authority urged Larnaca residents to use water responsibly to help avoid stricter measures or supply interruptions over the summer.
