The clearance under the Kalavasos bridge remains unchanged at 3.7 metres and was never high enough to accommodate fire trucks, the project’s contractors – joint venture Medcon and Wade Adams JV – said on Thursday.

They stated that the project was executed “in full compliance with the demands of the contract.”

“The implementation of the study upgraded the bridge to meet European seismic standards and addressed wear caused by around 40 years of use,” they added.

To carry out the strengthening works, the contractors built a temporary road with a clearance of 4.9 metres, which was sufficient for fire trucks to pass under.

On Tuesday, the Public Works Department also stated that the Kalavasos bridge, located near the site of the future energy centre, was structurally sound and unchanged.

“There is nothing wrong with the height of the Kalavasos bridge on the Nicosia–Limassol motorway,” said Limassol district engineer Panikos Panayiotou. He confirmed that the clearance has been 3.7 metres since the motorway’s construction.

On Monday, fire department spokesman Andreas Kettis told the Cyprus Mail that some fire trucks are unable to pass beneath the bridge.

“We went to the site – some fire engines cannot pass under the bridge,” Kettis said, noting that officers had visited the location more than once, accompanied by MPs and local officials.
