State doctors’ union Pasyki on Thursday vented its frustration over delays on the part of the state health services organisation (Okypy)’s renewal of contracts of seconded doctors, which expired at the end of last year.
The union accused Okypy of “intellectual inconsistency”.
“This serious omission creates a legal and administrative vacuum, which directly affects the legality of doctors’ status.”
Doctors, the union added, “are now in a state of uncertainty regarding their employment rights and obligations”.
It went on to ask “whether laws exist to be respected or selectively applied”.
Additionally, it said, “the non-renewal of the secondments does not constitute simple administrative negligence but is an indication of a deeper institutional deficit and the failure of a reform project which has led them to a lack of accountability”.
The union’s outcry also comes amid heightened tensions at Limassol general hospital, where doctors began taking industrial action over what they described as “unacceptable working conditions” caused by ongoing construction work.
According to Pasyki, doctors in affected specialties have suspended outpatient services, citing noise and pollution that disrupt both staff concentration and patient care.
