The new wildfire breaking out in the Paphos district on Thursday appeared to be in remission by early afternoon, but local authorities advised residents to remain on alert.
The blaze started near the village of Arodes.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, Akamas mayor Marinos Lambrou said the fire was burning wild vegetation, in terrain not directly accessible by vehicles.
Land-based firefighters were on the scene, and planes were making airdrops. Earlier, Politis newspaper had reported that two firefighting aircraft were operating in the area.
“It seems the fire is in remission,” the mayor said.
At one point the flames had come close to two residences – at a distance of some 200 metres.
Lambrou urged people to stay vigilant and alert authorities as soon as they spot a fire “so that we don’t mourn victims or the loss of property”.
Fire department spokesman Andreas Kettis said the blaze near Arodes has been contained.
Assisting the fire brigade on land were personnel from the forestry department, while excavators were creating firebreaks.
The firefighting planes making the airdrops have since redeployed to the Limassol district to combat the major blaze there.
Kettis said the causes of the fire in the Paphos district would be investigated at a later stage.
