It’s a normal day for real estate agent Sheila Hammond until she vomits out gallons of goo and a smallish red ball while showing a house to potential buyers with her realtor husband, Joel. A few hours after she wakes up dead, she is eating raw meat from the fridge and soon afterwards devouring an annoying colleague in their back garden.

Enter their daughter, Abby, who finds out all the gory details despite her parents’ sincerest efforts to protect her from the truth. As Netflix show Santa Clarita Diet continues, teen neighbour Eric, who has a massive crush on Abby and would do anything to help out and win valuable points, comes to her assistance.

As the family try to understand what happened, all the while feeding Sheila – excellently portrayed by Drew Barrymore – they are constantly dodging Eric’s mother, who keeps dropping in at the most inconvenient times, and his obnoxious police officer stepfather, who is onto something.

Sweetness and fiasco weave a hilarious story with excitement and zombies parading through the mundane lives of the people in Santa Clarita.

As Sheila’s appetite for human flesh gets stronger and incurable worrier Joel – masterly played by Timothy Olyphant – embarks on a quest to find a cure, the forgotten little red ball comes to life.

Meanwhile, a trail of dead bodies leads to the unfortunate realisation that Sheila is not alone, which spells trouble.

The story spreads over three seasons, during which Sheila is complimented for her energy and vitality, giving her the wonderfully selfless idea of giving people she likes the gift of a new lease of life simply by biting them into immortality.

As the series comes to a close, Joel has to decide whether he wants to live forever as a beautified zombie or die as a normal human being. The decision, however, may not be up either him or his cannibalistic wife.

There are more giggles than ‘ew’ moments to be had watching Santa Clarita Diet, even when Sheila starts falling apart – literally. A few fun hours that won’t keep you up at night.
