Projects worth more than €10 million were completed across Paralimni, mayor Giorgos Nikolettos announced on Monday.
He said the works were funded by the state, the deputy tourism ministry and the Famagusta tourism company and reflected “balanced development, social cohesion and an upgrade in the quality of life of our citizens”.
In Paralimni, Nikolettos heralded the upgrade to Kapparis avenue as the flagship project, costing €6.43 million and financed 80 per cent by the state and 20 per cent by the municipality.
He also commended the completion of the Paralimni children’s club, a €2 million social infrastructure project which he said “strengthens the family and childcare”.
The mayor further affirmed the completion of two additional monuments, calling them “a work of memory and historical responsibility” honouring Tasos Isaac and Solomos Solomou almost 30 years after their deaths at the Deryneia roadblock.
Additional works included new signage along the coastal pedestrian route and upgrades to green spaces such as Ayios Georgios park and Ayia Varvara park.
In the Deryneia municipality, two major infrastructure projects were completed.
The new municipal market, costing €1.5 million, was funded mainly through European and state funds, while the Sotiras road project reached completion at a cost of €13.5 million, again with 80 per cent state funding.
Nikolettos said the amphitheatre water park was upgraded with full funding from the deputy tourism ministry, while the Deryneia community centre, a €465,000 project, was fully financed by social welfare services.
In Acheritou, a new events hall was completed, while Saint George’s chapel was upgraded with full support from Famagusta tourism company.
Asked whether he was satisfied with the pace of development, Nikolettos admitted that the municipality had faced challenges following the unification of four local authorities.
“The reform created objective administrative and operational difficulties, which took time to overcome,” he said, adding that the municipality had nevertheless “laid the foundations for a unified planning and development strategy”.
He also thanked deputy mayors, councillors and municipal staff for working “on time without delays”.
