Investigations into the case of two people arrested on suspicion of terrorism after allegedly monitoring and photographing sites of foreign interest in Cyprus have so far found no evidence that they were acting on behalf of foreign intelligence services, police spokesman Vyron Vyronas said on Friday.

“We do not have such indications at this stage, but all aspects are being investigated,” he confirmed.

Asked whether there was any reason to believe the suspects had received external assistance or had associates in Cyprus, Vyronas said the information available to authorities remains limited.

“There is cooperation with various competent services,” he added.

He stressed that investigations are ongoing and that police may seek an extension of the five-day detention order issued on Friday, after the two suspects were brought before a district court and remanded in custody.

“The individuals were presented before the district court today, which issued a detention order. The case remains under investigation,” he said.

Local media outlet Alpha had initially reported that the suspects were “of Russian descent”. However, police said on Friday that the two were identified as being of Azerbaijani origin.

Sigma had previously wrote that both had been “allegedly monitoring and photographing points of foreign interest in Limassol, Larnaca, and Paphos”.
