A police constable has been detained in connection with an alleged assault on a mobile speed camera driver on the Paphos to Limassol highway, with a court on Wednesday granting a two-day remand to support ongoing investigations.
The latest development saw the 44-year-old police constable arrested under a court warrant on Tuesday, on the instructions of police-chief Themistos Arnaoutis.
A second suspect, aged 37, also remains in custody in relation to the same case.
Police said the incident occurred at around 2.40am on March 12, when a 36-year-old driver employed by a traffic light company was conducting a speed check from a mobile camera vehicle parked near the Kouklia exit.
According to investigators, three individuals arrived at the scene and approached the vehicle.
“One person asked to speak to the driver,” police said, adding that when the window was opened, “an unknown man allegedly sprayed him in the face while the other two struck the company vehicle, causing damage”.
The driver then left the scene and reported the incident at a local police station, filing a formal complaint shortly afterwards.
Authorities confirmed that both officers linked to the case have been suspended pending the outcome of the inquiry.
The investigation remains ongoing as officers continue to examine evidence and determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
