The interior ministry is examining “a lot of objections” to candidacies ahead of the May 24 parliamentary elections, chief returning officer Elikkos Elia said on Wednesday.
Speaking after the candidates for the representatives of the three religious groups – Latins, Maronites and Armenians – submitted their candidacies, Elia said elections were never easy, however these would not be the most difficult.
He singled out the elections of 2024 for local administration and MEPs as the hardest yet. “We managed and we held the elections in the proper way,” he added.
Elia pointed out that many objections had been filed over the past couple of days, which the interior ministry was examining in cooperation with the Law Office, to determine if the candidates in question met the requirements.
Objections can be submitted up to 24 hours after the candidacies are submitted.
