Cyprus’ association for nurses and midwives Pasynm called on Monday for targeted actions to improve staffing, working conditions, training and participation in decision making one day ahead of International Nurses Day, celebrated around the world on May 12.

They said a supportive working environment for nurses would translate into benefits for patients.

The nurses called on the state and society to acknowledge their role and support efforts for improvements.

“Nurses are on the front line of care, acting as the link between patients, families and health professionals… and their work is irreplaceable, particularly in times of heightened challenges and crises,” they added.

This year’s theme is Empowered Nurses Save Lives, which Pasynm said was “not only a moral obligation, but a strategic investment for health systems”.

Nurses who are part of civil servants union Pasydy appealed to policymakers to improve the overall safety of the health system, emphasising that the strengthening of nursing was directly linked to patient safety and the resilience of the system.

“With their knowledge, experience and dedication, [nurses] contribute decisively to the care and rehabilitation of patients,” Pasydy said.

The union once again warned of ongoing staffing shortages, saying that these marked one of the most significant challenges for health systems, directly affecting the quality of services offered.

“Addressing the problem makes it imperative for targeted policies that will enhance the attractiveness of the profession and create prospects for the new generation,” it added.

Pasydy called for support measures to improve working conditions and professional development opportunities, ensuring that young professionals continued to pursue careers in nursing.
